SongMeanings | Lyrics | Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know

Lyrics for You Oughta Know as interpreted by kevin

You Oughta Know Lyrics
I want you to know, that I am happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
An older version of me
Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theater?
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby?
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

'Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you
To be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me
You'd hold me until you died
Till you died, but you're still alive

And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity?
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face
How quickly I was replaced
And are you thinking of me when you ... her?

'Cause the love that you gave that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you
To be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me
You'd hold me until you died
Till you died, but you're still alive

And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

Ohh... aah... ahh... ahh...

'Cause the joke that you laid in the bed
That was me and I'm not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes, and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails
Down someone else's back I hope you feel it
Well, can you feel it?

And I'm here, to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair, to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

god. it makes me think of adam. i know he likes me, and i had a crush on him, but he's "together" with this bitchy girl. so the line "and are you thinking of me when you fuck her?" really speaks to me.

this song is basically about a girl who got dicked with by a guy, and then "it was a slap in the face / how quickly i was replaced"

she's kind of immature about it and poses the question, "does she do what i do?" under the rug swept is a much more mature album

This is yet again another great song by Alanis.. She's fantasic..and I love her music to bits.. The line(s) "Does she know how you told me..You'd hold me until you died..Till you died, but you're still alive..." is my MSN screen name right now..Cuz I think that those lines are so over-used. Not those one's exactly, but y'know, people say they re gonna be together forever, until they die and all this shit then they end up breaking up not so long after. I think it'd be best just NOT to say it, unless you knew it for a FACT! But who knows? Oh well, great song. :)

incubusrox: that sucks, I had a friend that happened to, but I stayed by her side like a true friend. Its so horrible when friends turn against other friends.

Anyways....I love this song. Alanis rocks

This is the greatest paean to outright rage and fury I've ever heard. I like it; I wish I knew more songs that expressed violent emotion as eloquently as this one. Like a blast of ice water to the face...

This is one of those songs that you don't realize the meaning of right away. I remember seeing it on like Alternative Nation on MTV when it first came out and thinking it was a catchy song and it has so much more meaning now. I broke up with my boyfriend of 3 and a half years in August of 2001, we had plans to be engaged in December and married by October of 2002. About a month after we broke up, he had already found another girlfriend and now I find out they're moving in together. It really kills because I'm still in love with him and this song sounds like every question I would love to ask him and everything I would love to say to him.

My ex boyfriend said that he would marry me and that he would never leave me either, but that all changed and he listened to the rumors that people were spreading because they didn't like me, and his mother didn't like me so she would say mean things. Now he ignores me and is going out with his ex. It hurts to be dumped especially by someone that you really loved, and especially when they were with you for a while, and especially when they made a lot of promises and said a lot of things. I'm still battling to get over him, but i'm still asking myself if she's anything like me, and questioning whether or not we'd get back together if she's not like me.

i love this song. i can see two interpretations. either that the speaker has been dumped by her boyfriend, and replaced quickly by another woman. the speaker is jealous, especially because the man promised to love her forever. she wants to hurt the man, and childishly hopes that he is suffering when she sleeps with other men. she wont leave the man alone. she feels that his new relationship is tainted, because he has already promised himself to the speaker. the speaker compares the new woman to herself, suggesting that she is still involved in the man's life, whereas really he has moved on. she cant get over him, and she wants to believe that he cant get over her.

my preferred version of events is that the man finished with the speaker because of the other woman. (how quickly i was replaced). initially the speaker found it very hard to deal with, and the first 2 verses reflect this. however, the last verse, she taunts him, that 'im not gonna fade,' and remarks that she hopes 'he can feel it' when shes with other men. this suggests that actually the speaker has moved onto other reltionships, whereas now it is the man who is hung up on her. in this way she has had her revenge for being dumped hastily. the man has realised that he wants her back, but the speaker no longer wants him, because she realises that the things he said didnt mean anything.

im not sure if im expressing myself very well. i love this song, because to me it seems that the woman has won, and whereas initially she seems a bit pathetic, she ends the song as the powerful one. great for when you feel like all men are horrid. whichj interpretation does everyone else go for?

This song sums up exactly, a situation I've just got myself out of. An older guy finished it with his older girlfriend and I got with him. But he went back to her without telling me and still insisted that he loved me everytime he was drunk. I had to watch him go away with her and that little naive part of me believed that he liked me.
The anger in this song is portrayed so well, her images so fitting, such as "the cross I bear" and "the joke that you laid in the bed."
The song is like the instant reaction to your pride being hurt and someone you care for hurting you (despite your denial of your feelings for them). You want them to hurt, you want to make them jealous "everytime I scratch my nails down someone else's back". Depending on the situation, you can go quite insane in your wrath.
This is the alanis I love, fiesty with an anger that pierces through you every time you listen to it. Amzing.

even though i'm a guy, I love this song. Women sometimes drop men like they are nothing... not as often as men, but nice guys like me do get burned a lot, dropped a lot even though they tell you how much they love you, and I end up feeling just like the woman in this song. Even though this is a great song, the memories it brings up are really powerful to me, and sometimes i have trouble listening to it.

Alanis has got to be one of the best female artists ever. If you feel like shit and just wanna take your anger out, listen to her and it makes things so much better.

My faveorite line has to be: And every time I scratch my nails Down someone else's back I hope you feel it
Well, can you feel it?

I love this song... I think one of the things that makes it so powerful is that it really shows raw emotion. Alanis does not sugar-coat her how she's feeling during this song. It's unedited and honest. For anyone that's been in a situation like this (I'm sure a lot of us have), you can relate. It's her gut reaction to what has happened. When you feel you've been wronged like this, as Alanis does, your thoughts often tend to be full of rage and maybe even violence. But these are just thoughts she has, things she yearns to say to him, but can't and probably never will. Instead, she's left with all this pent-up hurt and anger. SUCH an amazing song. It blows me away every time I hear it.

I love this song because it is so greatly honest... shes not afraid to bring out the bad in herself and the guy, because it doesnt change her loving him, and wondering what the hell he is doing with someone else. Shes letting out her weak side... although I see it as strong at the same time.

I like this song because she is very sincere in it! She says what she has to say without fear of being jugde!
It reflects one particular time of her life and she felt the need to express it! Good for her!
She just gets out what was boiling inside
She just says out loud what most people don't dare to say when they are confronted with that kind of situation!
It's a very courageous song! I love it!

This is a GREAT song. It's about a girl being dumped by a guy out of nowhere, she probably thought the relationship was fine and going well. Then her boyfriend dumps her, and she's devestated at first. Then, when she finds out that he's already with another girl, she's gets very mad. She realizes that she was pushed to the side for no reason, and she wants to know if this new girl is as good as her. Then, at the end,she kind of taunts him- saying how he'll never be able to forget her and when she's with another guy and having an amazing time she hopes he feels as hurt and she did. Great song...
